Selecting a Realtor®

Selecting a Realtor®

One of the best ways to select a Realtor is to ask friends and neighbors for referrals. If you don’t know anyone who’s worked with a Realtor lately, these steps are helpful.

Choosing a Realtor

First, make sure the agent you select is a Realtor – a member of the National Association of Realtors. Why? Not all real estate licensees are Realtors. What’s the difference? Realtors have taken an additional step – pledging to a strict Code of Ethics and professional conduct -- which is monitored by regional associations like RealSource.

Review Credentials

Once you've selected a few possible agents, visit their personal or firm’s web site, and schedule appointments to review their business philosophy, services, expertise and track record. Agents often have bios highlighting their career achievements and awards. Ask for a copy. In evaluating agents, you may come across acronyms including ABR®, CIPS, CRB, CRS®, e-PRO®, GRI, SRES® and others. These designations mean that the Realtor has taken extended professional training courses to stay current with advancements in technology, new legal requirements, and the increased sophistication of buyers and sellers. Ask the Realtor to explain how their expertise can benefit your transaction.

Personality is Key

While track record and education are important, you'll want to make sure that you can enjoy a good working relationship with the Realtor you select. Personality and listening skills can be critical to a pleasant and successful selling experience. Talk with potential candidates to make sure it’s a good fit and that the Realtor understands your needs and goals. You’ll come to think of your Realtor as an expert, a personal advisor and a partner in the transaction.

It's a good time...
